Introduction of School of Nursing,
Kunming Medical University
In 1993, Kunming Medical University (KUM) initiated a diploma program in nursing. This was one of the first institutions offering nursing higher education in Yunnan Province and southwest China. This paved the way to open an undergraduate program in nursing leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in 1998. With the development of the program, the School of Nursing was established in 2005, and later offered the Master of Science (M.S.) in Nursing in 2011. The nursing discipline is of the Key Provincial Discipline and the Key Discipline of Kunming Medical University with Characteristics in Yunnan.
Currently, the School of Nursing offers diploma, undergraduate and graduate programs, including the Diploma of Nursing Program, the Bachelor's Degree of Nursing, the Bachelor's Degree of Midwifery, the Master's Degree of Nursing, and the Master's Degree of Clinical Nursing. At present, there are about 2,000 students enrolled in the School including 52 graduate students.
The School has 36 full-time teaching staff on campus, and 115 teaching and supporting staff from the affiliated hospitals of KMU, in which there are 38 supervisors for master’s degree programs. The school is composed of the Department of Fundamental Nursing, Department of Clinical Nursing, Nursing Skill Training Center, Community Nursing Training Center of Yunnan Province, General Office, Teaching
Affairs Office, Discipline Construction Office, and Student Affairs Office.
Since its establishment, the school is involved in different research projects, such as National Teaching Reform Research project, Province-university Cooperation Research Project, Research Project of Provincial Department of Science and Technology of Yunnan, Research Project of Provincial Department of Education of Yunnan etc. In the past three years, the faculty of the school hosted or participated in more than 30 national, provincial and university programs. They also contributed to the editorial work with publication of more than 30 text-books incluing the “12th 5-year” Plan Text-book of the Ministry of Health, and text-books published by the People’s Medical Publishing House. The main areas of research of the school involve clinical nursing, community nursing, mental health nursing, gerontology in nursing, nursing administration and nursing pedagogy.
The School of Nursing has a first-class, multi-purpose and modern nursing skill laboratory covering an area of 3,000 square meters. The laboratory is equipped with advanced nursing teaching models, including an objective structured clinical testing center and the first mental health laboratory which integrates teaching, scientific research and social services in Yunnan Province. This provides the necessary platform and facilities for the high standard nursing professional skills teaching. The resources of KMU hospitals, comprising 4 affiliated hospitals, 10 teaching hospitals, 10 practice hospitals, 18 practice sites of nursing, provide an environment conducive for high quality teaching as well as for the student learning and advancement.
The school has made significant progress in the area of international exchange and cooperation. It has launched inter-institutional academic partnerships and exchange programs with medical schools and institutions from different areas and countries, such as Hong Kong, Singapore, U.S.A, Japan, Thailand, Sweden, and Finland.
In the more than two decades since its inception, the School of Nursing has not only provided high level nursing education but also taken the responsibility for the development of nursing and health care in Yunnan province. Many of the over 10,000 graduates of the school have become the local leaders, advocators, innovators, educators, and mentors in their own fields. These alumni through their dedication and contribution to the society have done the school proud. In view of their achievement, the school has gained wild recognition by the public. This has helped with the further development of the school that is growing from strength to strength.
Abiding by the University’s motto “Moral Advocacy, Intensive Study, Unity and Devotion”, the School of Nursing is striving to become a high-level provincial nursing school in Yunnan, which combines teaching, scientific research, and clinical nursing that aim to be one of the best in southwest China ultimately.
The School of Nursing will continue with its tradition, to cultivate with a balanced quality development that is creative, innovative in preparing the students for their future professional commitments.
